Mt. Kenya is a broad, largely symmetrical volcanic cone with a diameter of about 120km. and was formed between 2.6 and 3.1 million.  It was possible that the original volcano was over 7000m in height, more than 2000 meters higher than today.  Of the main peaks to the mountain, Batian 5,199m and Nelion 5,188m are only accessible to technical mountaineers, whilst Lenana, 4,985m, is accessible to trekkers.

==============================================

The itinerary described below is that which many of our clients use, however weather conditions, client fitness, and other factors, may require that we alter timings and route, indeed many clients request slightly different routings etc or to stay longer in particular area.

We are also able to offer clients the choice of different guides to suit different requirements or budgets.  These range from our own locally trained guides, to a European guide holding the UK MLTB Mountain Leader (ML) Award, through to the company’s founder - a climber of international experience

Day 1

Met by a  guide at Nanyuki airport or Nairobi. Depart to the Sirimon route turn off, where we meet the porters and the start of the track up the mountain. We enter the National Park at 2,440m.   Dependent on time, weather conditions or client preferences, we have the option to either spend the night at the Park Gate, or to continue in the vehicles to Judmier Camp where the first night can be spent at 3,150m - perhaps walking some of the way.  Most climbers opt to camp here.  Evening meal is served around a camp fire, and an early night is probably on the cards. You retire to the tents and to the bizarre sounds of the Mt Kenya moorlands.

Day 2

Breakfast is serviced at about 0700, after which bags are packed and you leave the campsite on foot, up through the moorland, and the tussock grass. The heather and proteas are quite beautiful, particularly when some of the other flowers are in bloom - gladiolus, kniphofra and senecio. Lunch at around 12.30. After lunch you continue the walk towards Liki North 4,000m, arriving early afternoon. The remainder of the afternoon is spent relaxing in camp and taking optional short walks up the valley towards Tereri and Sendeyo. After an early hot dinner and when you are tired you retire to your tent for the night.

Day 3

Another hearty breakfast. From the camp you climb up to 4,150m crossing over a large ridge, back onto the main tourist track for the rest of the walk, lunch is severed an hour and half from Shiptons camp (the next night) at a river crossing 4, 100m. After a relaxing lunch we continue the climb to Shiptons, pass the caves, to an altitude of 4,200m for the night. The camp is situated below the scree slops to the main peaks. In the late afternoon when all the cloud has hopefully cleared, there are great views of the main peaks, along with the route to the summit for the next days walk. An early dinner followed by an early night in preparation for the early start, as you are attempting the summit next day.

Day 4

You are woken at 3am in the morning. (Did you actually sleep at all), with a cup of tea or coffee, and a good breakfast. The majority of the walk is in the dark so you are at least well on the way to Pt Lenana, via Simba Col by sun rise. The final grunt to the top - hopefully before the clouds have started to move in and the celebratory photos of you victorious on the summit.   We depart the peak via the same route getting back to Shiptons for 9am.  Some food and a rest before we depart Shiptons walking down the Mackinders Valley all the way back to Judmier. Here you have the option to spend the night if time is against us, or preferably into the vehicles and drive down to the park gate, and camp the night there, this time to the sounds of the Mt Kenya rain forest.

Day 5

After a lie in and after a good breakfast we depart the camp and drive the 14km down a dirt track until we hit the main Nanyuki  - Timau road, where we turn left and head straight to the Nanyuki airport

Alternatives

From there, descend the tourist route towards Mackinders Camp.  Bear right near to Pt John then ascend a steep scree to Two Tarn, and on to Arthur’s Seat, Hausberg Tarn and Col and so on to  Shiptons.  This  walk is about 4hrs from Point Lenana and requires some 500m of  additional ascent / descent.
